Legend has it that the clams extended from Cape Romano all the way to Everglades City.  According to Preston Sawyer as told to Maria Stone, author of “The Caxambas Kid”, the richest beds were between Cape Romano and Guilliman's Bay. They extended along the shore line for fifty miles and from shore to offshore for one to one and a half miles.
